Description: Hello All… So sorry for being gone for a while. We have had a lot going on these past few weeks. WE HAVE A GRADUATE!!! Can’t believe Cody has graduated. But enough about us. Today we want to talk to you about Acuba plants. These plants are beautiful EVERGREEN shrubs that love the shade and and they can grow 6-10 ft tall. Their leaves are nice leathery green or have a golden that can reach 5-8 inches in length. These shrubs may have some flowers on them but they are planted for the EVERGREEN foliage they have.
The Acuba does really well the more shade they get. If this plant is in to much sun the leaves will wilt and turn black. The more shade this shrub gets the nicer the foliage is. The acuba survives in our southern winters and cold snaps. Thank the Good Lord for that. 🙂 These shrubs need well drained soil. When watering these plants make sure you water with cold water and not hot water from the hose. If the water is too hot you could encourage disease and no one wants that. You plant these shrubs about 4 ft. apart. They may grow a little slower but to keep them the height you want you just prune the tops of them. If you have the variegated type of acuba use it as a specimen, in screens or groupings, provided it is planted in shade. The variegated types brighten a dark corner or break the monotony of a large sea of green.
Mulching these plants is pretty easy. You need a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around and over the base of the plants to help the soil hold moisture and to help prevent weeds. Hey these shrubs are not liked by insects too much so that’s a plus. lol.. These shrubs are pretty disease resistant as well.
